People ask me all the time if Crown Point is just a cheaper version of the Chicago suburbs. It's not. It has its own identity โ€” a historic downtown square, strong schools, tight-knit neighborhoods, and a pace of life that a lot of families genuinely didn't know they were missing until they got here.

I've lived and worked in Northwest Indiana for over 16 years. Crown Point is where I'd tell my own family to look first. Here's the honest version of what life is like here โ€” the good, the things to know, and what to expect when you make the move.

    The Downtown Square

Crown Point's historic courthouse square is the real thing โ€” not a strip mall dressed up to look like a town center. The old Lake County Courthouse anchors the square, and around it you'll find locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, a couple of breweries, and a farmers market that runs through the warmer months.

There are events on the square year-round โ€” Taste of Crown Point, car shows, holiday markets, live music in the summer. It's the kind of thing you can walk to if you're in the right neighborhood, and it gives the city a sense of community that a lot of people moving from the suburbs are genuinely surprised by.

    The Schools

Crown Point Community School Corporation is consistently ranked among the top school districts in Indiana. The high school has strong graduation rates, competitive athletics, and a variety of AP and dual-credit programs. For families with younger kids, the elementary schools are well-regarded and the district has invested significantly in facilities over the past decade.

This is one of the top reasons families with school-age children specifically seek out Crown Point over other NWI communities. If schools are a priority for you, Crown Point should be at the top of your list.

"We moved specifically for the schools. Two years in, our kids are thriving and we wonder why we waited so long."

    The Commute to Chicago

Let's be straight about this because I'd rather tell you the truth than have you find out on day two. Crown Point is about 40โ€“50 miles from downtown Chicago. On a good day โ€” off-peak, no incidents โ€” you're looking at 45 minutes on I-65. On a normal weekday morning heading into the city, plan for 60โ€“75 minutes.

For hybrid workers โ€” in the office two or three days a week โ€” this is completely manageable and the trade-off is clearly worth it. For five-day commuters, it's a bigger commitment and worth thinking honestly about before you buy.

The South Shore Line commuter rail is also an option, with a station in nearby Dyer and expanded service coming as part of the West Lake Corridor extension. Many Crown Point residents drive to a South Shore station and take the train in, which lets them work or decompress during the ride.

    The Neighborhoods

Crown Point has a range of neighborhoods depending on what you're looking for. Aberdeen and Doubletree are popular with families for their newer construction, good lot sizes, and proximity to top-rated schools. The historic neighborhoods closer to the square have older homes with more character and walkability. South Haven offers larger lots and more space if that's the priority.

New construction communities are actively building on the south and west sides of town, with builders like Olthof Homes and D.R. Horton offering move-in-ready and build-to-suit options in the $380,000โ€“$550,000 range.

What People Miss About Illinois (and What They Don't)

I ask every client who makes the move what they miss. The honest answers: proximity to certain restaurants or family members still in Illinois, and occasionally the convenience of having everything within five minutes. Crown Point is a real city but it's not Chicago โ€” you'll drive further for some things.

What they don't miss: the property tax bills, the traffic on non-commute days, the cost of everything, and the feeling that their dollar wasn't going very far. Almost universally, people tell me they wish they'd made the move sooner.
